Israeli diplomat to return to Warsaw to ease tensions with Poland

A senior Israeli diplomat will resume her role in Poland this week is a sign of improved relations between the two countries.

Chargé d'Affaires Tal Ben-Ari returned to Israel in August following Warsaw's adopting of legislation limiting attempts, including by Jewish people, to regain property the Nazis stole, with Poland ordering its ambassador to return home.

Since then, Poland has accepted the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism, The Jerusalem Post reported, a move which has been well-received by Israel, a foreign ministry source said.

The working definition has been criticised by some for restricting criticism of Israel's actions against Palestinians.

Poland's government has made moves in the United Nations viewed as favourable toward Israel and criticised antisemitic chants by far-right activists on Polish independence day.

On Sunday, the Polish embassy condemned a shooting by a Palestinian man in occupied East Jerusalem, who was later killed by Israeli forces.

Ben-Ari's return to Poland is intended to be a low-key affair, without any press statement, an Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs insider told The Jerusalem Post.

Yaacov Livne was given the ambassador role prior to the souring in Polish-Israeli relations, though he was never able to take up the job.
