Israeli airstrikes on the southern Lebanese town of Dardghaya in Tyre on Wednesday killed five rescue workers and damaged a church.

Lebanon’s state civil defence body said the workers "were killed in an Israeli strike that targeted the civil defence centre in the village of Dardghaya as they were inside on the alert to receive emergency calls".

Lebanon's health ministry said that the death toll of five emergency workers was provisional.

Videos circulating on social media showed the extent of the raid on Dardghaya, showing significant damage to the church's exterior.

A residential home inhabited by an elderly couple was additionally struck as a result of the attack.

The health ministry urged the international community to take a "firm position" following Israel's repeated targeting of rescue and ambulance teams.

Among the victims of Wednesday’s airstrike was Abdullah Al-Moussawi, the head of the Tyre Regional Centre in the Lebanese Civil Defense.

A week prior, Al-Moussawi had expressed concerns about the safety of his team in an interview with The Associated Press (AP)

Al-Moussawi told the AP that he remained hopeful that international protections for medics would apply to them.

"We put international protection (tag) on our vehicles along with the (national) Civil Defence flag and we wear the yellow vests," he said.

The Lebanese Health Ministry reported over 100 paramedic deaths from Israeli airstrikes as of last Thursday.

The Israeli military has not issued an immediate statement regarding the strikes.

On Thursday, UNIFIL reported that Israeli tank fire struck its headquarters in Naqura, injuring two members. The Israeli military also hit another UNIFIL position in Ras Naqura.

The UNIFIL force stated that any deliberate attack on peacekeepers constitutes a serious violation of international humanitarian law.

In its statement, it confirmed that it is in contact with the Israeli military to follow up on the recent incidents

The Lebanese Health Ministry reported that Israeli strikes have killed over 2,100 people in Lebanon over the past year, the majority in recent weeks.
