At least 27 people were killed by an Israeli air strike on a school sheltering displaced people in Nuseirat, as Israel's offensive shifts to central Gaza

Gaza's government media office said on Thursday that at least 27 people were killed and dozens injured in an Israeli attack in Nuseirat, as one of Gaza's few functioning hospitals issued an urgent plea calling for electricity supplies after its generator collapsed.

A school sheltering displaced civilians in Nuseirat in central Gaza was hit by an Israeli air strike which reportedly killed 27 people and injured dozens more, according to local reports, as Israeli forces bombarded the neighbourhood overnight.

The renewed attacks have overwhelmed local Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, which said that on Wednesday that one of two generators had broken down and as a result patients, including new born babies on incubators and people in ICU, were at risk of death if power supplies are lost.

It said the generator collapse "threatens a humanitarian disaster that may kill dozens of wounded, sick and premature babies sleeping in intensive care rooms and under ventilators that operate on electricity".

The hospital has been swamped with hundreds of wounded people in recent days as Israeli forces conduct a renewed offensive into central Gaza near the city of Deir Al-Balah, prompting hundreds to flee.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his country was prepared for "extremely powerful" response to Lebanon's Hezbollah group, after strikes from the two warring parties surged in recent days alongside the threat of an outright war on Israel's northern frontier.

Officials from Egypt, Qatar and Hamas met in Doha on Wednesday to discuss the ongoing ceasefire deal presented by the US last weekend.

Israel's war on Gaza has killed at least 36,586 people since it began in October, according to the Palestinian territory's health ministry.
