Israeli forces shot dead a Palestinian on Saturday after he allegedly carried out an attack at a military checkpoint near Jerusalem.

Israeli police alleged he was in possession of a gun and that they killed him after he opened fire and lightly wounded a guard at Qalandia checkpoint, The New Arab's Arabic sister service Al-Araby Al-Jadeed reported.

The 18-year-old was claimed as an alleged member by the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, an armed group associated with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah party.

He was identified as Ishaq Hamdi Ajlouni, according to the official Palestinian news agency Wafa, which said that he was from occupied East Jerusalem's Kufr Aqab neighbourhood.

Citing witnesses, the news agency said he was "left bleeding on the ground for hours until he was declared dead".

Sounds of fighting could be heard in videos shared on social media, while other clips showed ambulances rushing to the scene.

Separately, another Palestinian died on Saturday as a result of injuries sustained the day before when Israeli forces shot him in the occupied West Bank.

Tareq Moussa Idris, 39, was struck in the abdomen and transferred to a hospital, the Palestinian health ministry said in a Facebook post.

With Saturday's deaths, the number of Palestinians killed so far this year by Israeli forces and settlers is at 180.

It comes as a Palestinian, aged five, who was shot by Israeli forces with a rubber-coated metal bullet amid confrontations near Nablus on Friday had his eye removed on Saturday, a Wafa correspondent reported.

There has also been an escalation in attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank in recent days.
