Israeli army asks Wikipedia to label Hezbollah a 'terrorist organisation'

Israel wants Wikipedia to 'update' its entry on the Lebanese militia and political movement Hezbollah, according to a tweet posted by the Israeli army  on Tuesday.

The Israeli military has taken issue with the online encyclopedia's description of Hezbollah as a "political party and a militant group".

The group is "much more than that", the tweet said.

"Since its foundation in 1982, Hezbollah has become globally recognised as a terrorist organisation including [emoji flags of various countries]," it continued.

The post includes a mobile screen shot of the first few sentences of Wikipedia's entry on Hezbollah for illustration purposes.

However, the remainder of the first paragraph of the Wikipedia article seems to have skipped the attention of the Israeli army.

The entry does indeed state that, "either the entire organisation or just its military wing has been designated a terrorist organisation by many countries including the European Union".

Iran-backed Hezbollah is a sworn enemy of Israel, with which it has had a series of confrontations, including a full-scale war in 2006.

The group is the only side not to have disarmed following Lebanon's 1975-1990 civil war, and it is also a powerful player in Lebanese politics with seats in parliament.

Israel and Lebanon are still technically at war, and a United Nations force, UNIFIL, patrols the border between the two, beefed up after the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah war.
