A German kite surfer broke the record for the world's longest female surf when she rode from Bahrain to Qatar's capital Doha.

Anke Brandt made the 298km (161 nautical miles) trip in 17 hours, going 47km further than her previous 2014 record.

The trip, intended to end in Abu Dhabi, was interrupted by weather conditions that forced the surfer to finish in Doha, the capital of Qatar.

"The first sectors of our journey went very well with great progress, followed however by calm periods that cost us more than 2 hours of stagnation," Brandt wrote in her online blog.

"In addition, with the (weather) front moving in faster than predicted, the call had to be made to keep the boat and crew safe and led to an early arrival into Doha."

But the keen adventurer said she intends to reattempt the original 550km trip to Abu Dhabi next month.

"With all this knowledge in our bag, there is no other way but to try again," she said.

Brandt's journey was part of a campaign aiming to fundraise 'Wings for Life'- a charity that funds world class scientific research into spinal cord injuries across the world.

"I want to support 'Wings for Life' as I believe they work towards a very important goal of making spinal cord injury curable and facilitate the development of technologies designed to reduce the risk of injury."

So far, Brandt has raised $5,500 for the charity.
