An eight-year-old child died after falling into a well in Syria, according to the Syrian regime’s ministry of interior.

The child – Hassan J – fell into the well in the village of Janat Al-Saleh, in the Al-Khafsa district of Aleppo province, police in the area were informed on Thursday.

Hassan was grazing sheep next to the well before the incident happened.

He drowned in the water, according to medical examinations published by the regime ministry.

“A child fell into a water well in the village of Janat Al-Saleh while grazing sheep next to the well… the body of the child was duly handed over to his parents,” the regime stated.

In a similar incident, a child and his father died, last week, after they fell into a well in Khan Sheikhoun in the northern province of Idlib, Syria TV reported.

Many wells across Syria are exposed and have few warning signs surrounding them.

Accidents of this type and other cases of drowning increase during the summer.

This is both because people tend to visit rivers and lakes during hotter weather and because farmers rely on water collection reservoirs near wells to irrigate their crops.

Last February, a five-year-old boy's death after he fell down a 30-metre-deep well in Morocco was mourned around the world.

Following a week of desperate attempts to save him the boy, Rayan, was extracted from the well but died shortly afterwards.
