A traveller at the Cairo International Airport was caught trying to smuggle more than one million Egyptian pounds inside shawarma sandwich wraps.

The individual, whose initials were only revealed, was travelling to Kuwait on an Egyptair flight when airport security grew suspicious of their luggage contents, a source from the airport told local media.

Upon inspection, authorities found 1,253,000 Egyptian Pounds (around $26,100) packaged to appear like shawarma wraps.

The source added that legal measures had been taken against the traveller, an Egyptian national.

No further details were given on the matter. Images of the money were shared online.

In Egypt, travellers are allowed to bring in or take out a maximum of $10,000 or its equivalent in other currencies without making a declaration.

Egypt has faced a serious currency crisis in recent years. High inflation rates, power rationing, subsidy cuts and other economic difficulties have weighed heavily on much of the country’s population.
