Egypt star Mohamed Salah 'sorry' for Cameroon AFCON stampede deaths

Egyptian football star Mohamed Salah on Tuesday offered his sympathies to the families of those killed and to the injured after a stampede outside a stadium in Cameroon where an African Cup of Nations (AFCON) match was taking place.

At least eight people were killed and dozens injured on Monday as crowds struggled to enter the Olembe Stadium in the Cameroonian capital Yaounde for the Cameroon v Comoros game.

Witnesses blamed the tragedy on weak security at the stadium.

"We are sorry about what happened yesterday and hopefully the injured will come back home safe", Salah, the captain of the Egypt team said.

Competition organisers decided on Tuesday to suspend all further games at the stadium pending an investigation.

“I have given the local organising committee... up to Friday to tell me who was responsible for the accident, who shares the blame and additional safety and security measures taken to protect football fans, players and match officials," said Patrice Motsepe, president of the Confederation of African Football, which runs AFCON alongside local organisers from the host country.

“Our priority is the safety of people and if we are not assured that the stadium offers that safety, we will not accept matches to be played there again,” he added.
