Drones hit Syrian opposition faction stationed at US-held base

Drones hit sites belonging to a faction of the Syrian opposition forces at a US military base in southern Syria overnight on Wednesday, a spokesman for the armed group said.

The drones hit a site belonging to the Maghawir Al-Thawra (Revolutionary Commandos) group at the Al-Tanf military base, the faction's media spokesman, Abdul Razzaq Khader, told The New Arab's sister site Al-Araby Al-Jadeed.

There were no casualties in the attack, the spokesman said, but buildings were damaged.

The group  is a partner of the US-led coalition fighting the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. Though the extremist group was territorially defeated in Syria in March 2019, it continues to conduct attacks in the country.

Khader said the faction did not know who conducted the attack on the base, which is close to Syria's borders with Iraq and Jordan.

However, the attack comes amid an increase in attacks on sites of US interest in Iraq and Syria by Iran-backed proxies in recent months.

Al-Tanf base was hit in October 2021 with five explosive-laden drones, causing significant material damage.

The nearby Al-Rukban refugee camp has been under siege for years, preventing residents who fear returning to their homes in Assad regime held territory from receiving much-needed food and healthcare.

Jordan announced that it would stop allowing any aid to enter the camp from its territory in 2016, citing security threats.

Concurrently, the Syrian regime imposed a siege on the camp from its end and prevented any goods from entering.

The camp however received a food shipment from Jordan earlier this week.
