Death toll from New Zealand mosque massacres rises to 50

The death toll from a massacre in two New Zealand mosques on Friday has been raised to 50, after police said they found another body at the scene on Sunday.

New Zealand Police Commissioner Mike Bush announced the latest death at a news conference Sunday, saying that while 37 victims remain in hospital, two of them are in critical condition.

Suspect Brenton Harrison Tarrant was apprehended after shooting dead worshippers at two mosques in Christchurch, in a racist and Islamophobic attack. The killer livestreamed the attack, which saw children as young as three shot.

Tarrant, aged 28, has been detained and appeared in court on Saturday.

Two people arrested at the time of the twin mosque attacks in New Zealand were not involved in the massacre carried out by Australian extremist Brenton Tarrant, police said on Sunday.

The death toll of Friday’s devastating mass shooting rose to 50 people, AFP reported.

The number of people killed or wounded in the racist shooting represent around 1 in every 500 Muslims in New Zealand, which has a Muslim population of nearly 50,000.
