Gaza's health ministry said the death toll from an Israeli strike Saturday on Al-Mawasi, where displaced Palestinians were sheltering, had risen to 90.

The ministry said "half" of the dead were women and children and that there were 300 wounded, many in a "critical" condition. Medical sources had said earlier on Saturday that rescuers who had scrambled to find those injured and still alive were also targeted.

Israel said it had targeted head of Hamas' military wing Mohammad Deif in the area, in the Gaza Strip's south. Hamas denies Deif is dead.

The new massacre came as international mediators pushed on with efforts to halt the war on Gaza, now in its tenth month, which has killed over 38,000 people, mostly women and children.
