Arab League slams Trump’s Jerusalem, Golan decisions as 'void'

Jerusalem and the Golan heights has been at the heart of the Arab League meeting concluded on Sunday in the Tunisian capital, a draft statement released to Anadolu demonstrated.

The Arab leaders in the statement condemned Trump’s recent stances and decisions on Jerusalem and the Golan Heights.

The Palestinian case is “a focal case for the Arab nation,” the statement said.

“We reiterate that the US’ decision to make Jerusalem a capital for Israel is void and illegitimate. East Jerusalem will remain Arab Palestine’s capital,” said the statement, warning of any attempt to change the current legal and political status of Jerusalem.

The statement also called on states not to recognise or move their embassies to the disputed city.

Syria was also at the core of this meeting.

Arab leaders attending the Tunis meeting condemned Trump’s recent resolution to recognise Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights, a territory that Israel seized from Syria in the 1967 Arab-Israeli war.

“The leaders have reiterated that the US' declaration recognising Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights is null and void.”

The statements also criticised Iran’s intervention in the region and called for it to withdraw its “militias” from Arab countries.

“We reject all Iran’s intervention in Arab internal affairs and we condemn its hostile attempts to destabilise [the region],” the statement read.

The statement also demanded Iran accept the UAE’s initiative to find a peaceful solution to the island of Greater and Lesser Tunbs, administered by Iran and claimed by the UAE.

Meanwhile, the summit also expressed solidarity with other politically and socially volatile Arab and Muslim countries, including Libya, Yemen, Iraq, Sudan, Somalia and Comoros as well as the Rohingya Muslims.
