Algerian actress Sofia Boutella is set to star in Netflix's upcoming science-fiction movie Rebel Moon.

The actress has swept across Hollywood in the past few years in principle roles such as Ahmanet in The Mummy, alongside Tom Cruise and will be starring in the upcoming film that Zack Snyder is co-writing with Shay Hatten and Kurt Johnstad.

Insiders told Deadline that Boutella had been successful in testing for the part alongside a small group of actresses.

“Boutella wowed Snyder and a decision came fast to make her the lead,” the publication says.

Following on from his success with Army of the Dead, Snyder will direct the film, which is set in space and follows a colony at the edge of the galaxy that is threatened by Regent Balisarius and his army.

“Such an honor to be joining genius Zack Snyder on his new epic journey,” Boutella wrote on Instagram, sharing a photo of the Deadline news article.

“Can’t wait!” she added.

Boutella was born in Bab El Oued, a neighbourhood in Algeria’s capital Algiers to musician Safy Boutella and an architect mother.

Boutella started her career young, as a classical dancer. She and her family moved to France to get away from the civil war in 1992, when she was ten-years-old.

Nearly a decade later, at 18 she joined the French rhythmic gymnastics national team and embarked on a prolific dancing career, which paved her way into acting.

In 2015 the 39-year-old appeared in Kingsman: The Secret Service, and continued to land big Hollywood roles.

Boutella recently attended the Expo 2020 in Dubai.
