An Israeli man has been left with "serious injuries" after a 19-year-old Palestinian stabbed him at a supermarket in the city of Yavne on Wednesday.

Ismail Ibrahim Ismail Abu Aram stabbed the 43-year-old man in the upper body causing critical injuries, Israeli emergency services said.

The incident took place in the Shufersal supermarket in the town of Yavne, located around five kilometres south of Tel Aviv, near the coast.

The New Arab has seen a video of the stabbing attack, showing the young man walk past the victim while he was stacking toilet rolls, before turning back to stab him repeatedly in the neck and shoulders.

After the incident, the young man, reportedly from the West Bank village of Yatta, fled the scene before he was detained and beaten by a group of Israeli men.

Police officers arrived minutes later and arrested the man as he lay on the ground, while a group of Hebrew-speaking men kicked and insulted him. He is now being held for questioning.

There have been a spate of knife attacks in recent weeks, as protests increased in the occupied territories over new Israeli security measures in an area surrounding the al-Aqsa mosque compound.

At least 13 Israelis have been killed since the start of the year while 53 Palestinians have been killed by Israelis as tensions continue to rise.
