At least 100 passengers were rescued when a ship they were travelling on crashed in the Nile River in southern Egypt.

Authorities received reports that the ship, which was also transporting several vehicles, crashed near the city of Biba in Egypt’s Beni Suef governorate.

Rescue teams were immediately sent, and the passengers were transported to a marina on the western banks of the Nile near the village of Kafr Nasser.

The head of the council of Biba, Medhat Salah, confirmed to Al Arabiya that there were no casualties as a result of the incident. He added that the accident was partially to do with the decreased water levels in the Nile.

Ferry, railway and road accidents are common in Egypt, mainly due to poor maintenance and the lack of regulations. Dozens of people die as a result every year.
