American actress Lindsay Lohan has spoken out against the Syrian regime and its ally Russia as a brutal military offensive on the city of Aleppo has sparked global outrage.

Lohan said Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin were guilty of "war crimes" in Aleppo.

"State terror. #Assad & #Putin crimes in #Syria #Aleppo. [All honour Putin]," she tweeted out to her over nine million followers on Thursday.

Lohan's tweet came as Syrian regime forces have recaptured half the former rebel stronghold of east Aleppo in a push that has left dead bodies in the streets.

The 30-year-old actress has recently taken up the cause of the Syrian people after she had an "eye opening experience" during a visit to refugee camps in Turkey last month.

She even asked President-elect Donald Trump last month to come to Syria and Turkey to see the plight of the millions of Syrian refugees first hand.

Lohan's tweet has sparked fierce online debate with many social media users commending the actress' bold move.

"I'm more and more impressed with her courage to speak out, especially when most celebrities from her specific background (from teenie bopper days) would never dare tackle such a topic or even stand on the right side. God bless her and guide her," said one Reddit user.

In 2015, Lohan has sparked a debate on whether she has converted to Islam after she was spotted with a Quran in New York.

During her trip to Turkey, she wore a hijab while visiting refugee camps, she also revealed on Turkish TV that she had studied the Quran, adding: "they crucified me for it in America."

Lohan did tweet out a topless picture hours after condemning the Assad regime, raising doubts she has had a religious epiphany.
