An Iranian MP has offered a multi-million dollar reward to anyone who kills US President Donald Trump and also called on Tehran to develop nuclear weapons.

Ahmad Hamzeh, MP for Kerman, told parliament that his province would give $3 million to whoever killed Trump, Reuters reported.

"On behalf of the people of Kerman province, we will pay a $3 million reward in cash to whoever kills Trump," Hamzeh said, according to ISNA news agency.

It was not clear if the bounty was sanctioned by the government but follows heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran following the US assassination of Iranian general Qasem Soleimani.

During the speech, Hamzeh also urged the Tehran government to acquire a nuclear arsenal.

"If we had nuclear weapons today, we would be protected from threats... We should put the production of long-range missiles capable of carrying unconventional warheads on our agenda. This is our natural right," he said, according to Reuters.

Iran's nuclear programme is for civilian purposes only, it argues, rejecting claims from Israel and others that it is seeking to acquire nuclear weapons.

Western countries, China and Russia agreed to a nuclear deal with Iran in 2015, which limited Tehran's ability to develop a nuclear arsenal in return for sanctions relief.

President Donald Trump pulled the US out of the nuclear deal in 2018 and enforced tough new sanctions on Iran, designed to economically cripple the country.

In response, Iran has been accused of carrying out attacks on the interests of the US and its allies in the region and broken some restrictions of the deal.

The EU and other countries are attempting to rescue the deal but Iran warned on Monday that it would withdraw from the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) if international sanctions were re-enforced.

US disarmament ambassador Robert Wood described Hamzah's stunt as "ridiculous".
