Palestinian officials have renamed a street in an occupied West Bank town after locals protested over Bahrain's hosting of a US-led summit last week.

Palestinian mayor Ibrahim Abu Zahra approved changing the name of Bahrain Street in the town of Yatta to Marzouq al-Ghanim Street, after the speaker of Kuwait's National Assembly and in recognition of Kuwait's rejection of the 'Deal of the Century', The Times of Israel reported.

A statement issued by Yatta's municipality said that the change took place this weekend as a result of appeals submitted by local residents to hail Kuwait's support of Palestinians.

The 'Peace to Prosperity' conference in Bahrain was boycotted by the Palestinians, who accused the unabashedly pro-Israel US President Donald Trump of dangling the prospect of cash to try to impose political solutions.

The Palestinian leadership, which has boycotted the White House over a series of pro-Israeli moves including recognising the disputed city of Jerusalem as capital of Israel, insists a political solution to the conflict with Israel must come before economic issues.

Kuwait's parliamentary speaker Marzouq al-Ghanim is known for being an outspoken critic of Israel.

In 2017, he made global headlines after lambasting Israel for being "child killers" and kicking out its representative from a conference in Russia.

Ghanim launched the tirade during his speech at the Inter-Parliamentary Union Conference, stating the Israeli delegate "represents the most dangerous form of terrorism; state terrorism".

"You should take your bags and leave this hall. Leave now if you have an atom of dignity…you occupier, you child killers," he added in the midst of applause, before the Israeli official walked out.
