Rude awakening: Trump 'may start morning with loud Muslim Eid prayer' during London visit

The American president, who has a history of making anti-Islamic remarks and capitalised on Islamophobic sentiments during his 2016 presidential campaign, is on a state visit to the UK.

The ambassador's residence is just across the road from the London Central Mosque, which will be holding Eid prayers from 7 am to 12:30 pm on Tuesday.

Most Muslims in the UK will be celebrating Eid on Tuesday after the majority of Muslim countries in the world announced that the crescent moon which marks the beginning of the Islamic month of Shawwal had been sighted.

Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, and Egypt are among the countries celebrating today. Iran and Malaysia will be celebrating on Wednesday.

The prayers at London Central Mosque are expected to be well attended by members of London's half-a-million strong Muslim community.

Social media users were quick to point out the irony of Trump, who instituted a travel ban affecting citizens of several Muslim-majority countries as one of his first acts as president, staying near the mosque during Eid.

Even before his plane landed in London on Monday, Trump caused controversy by tweeting that London's Muslim mayor, Sadiq Khan, was a "stone cold loser".

Khan and Labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn both boycotted a state banquet given in Trump's honour last night.
