Teenage Muslim hero opens mosque to shelter students from Wisconsin school shooting
A Muslim teenager in Wisconsin has been hailed as a hero after she sheltered around 100 students at her mosque during a stabbing and shooting attack at a local high school.
Duaa Ahmad, a 17-year-old student from Oshkosh West High School, sprang into action after an armed 16-year-old suspect carried out an attack on Tuesday, stabbing a school resource officer before being shot.
Video footage shows Ahmad entering the security code to her mosque, located across the street from the high school, and ushering in dozens of terrified students before entering herself.
"I just felt like I did what had to be done," the teenager told ABC. "I was there at the right time in the worst situation," she added.
Her father, a financial secretary at the mosque, told CNN that he was proud of his daughter's actions.
"I'm really glad she opened the mosque right away and took the initiative," he said. "I was quite proud of her that she was able to handle this situation at such a young age."
Around 100 students are thought to have taken shelter in the mosque during the incident.
The father and daughter gave the students water and made sure everyone was comfortable until they were reunited with their parents.
The student and resource officer were treated at a hospital for minor injuries.
The OshKosh Ahmadiyya Muslims Facebook group praised Duaa for her actions and told the community that "our doors are always open."
The incident was the second shooting to take place in a high school in the state of Wisconsin in two days.
