The Islamic State group announced on Tuesday evening the death of one of the sons of the organisation's commander Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, after he reportedly carried out a suicide attack against regime troops in rural Syria, according to The New Arab's correspondent.

The group's media outlet confirmed that Hudeifa al-Badri, the son of Baghdadi, was killed on Monday during an "inghimasi operation", meaning a suicide attack, against "Nusayriyyah and Russian groups", in a power station in rural Homs.

"Nusayriyyah" is an alternate term for the Alawite Syrian forces loyal to Bashar al-Assad. Alawites belong to an offshoot of Shiism and comprise much of the Syrian political elite.

The group issued an annoucement showing a picture of teenage-looking Hudhaifa al-Badri.

Parts of Homs still contain pockets of IS militants, and clashes frequently break out between the extremists and forces loyal to the Assad regime.
