West Bank teenager shot by Israeli troops in Nakba protest dies

A Palestinian teenager has succumbed to a gunshot wound inflicted by Israeli troops last week in the occupied West Bank during Nakba Day protests.

Fifteen-year-old Odai Akram Abu Khalil died on Wednesday, the state-run WAFA news agency reported.

Israeli troops shot Abu Khalil in the abdomen last week during a protest near Ramallah on the 70th anniversary of the Nakba, news website Arab48 reported.

Major protests took place across the Palestinian territories on May 14 as the US transferred its Israeli embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv.

Smaller protests took place on May 15, which was the 70th anniversary of the Nakba, or catastrophe, when hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were expelled from their land during the war surrounding the creation of Israel.

Israeli troops massacred more than 60 Palestinians along the Gaza border over the two days, but the teen who died on Wednesday was the first killed in the West Bank.

Since 30 March, Gazans have been marching to demand the right to return to their homes in territory seized by Israel in the 1948 war surrounding the creation of the Jewish state.

Israeli troops have shot dead a total of 119 Palestinians and wounded over 10,000 on the border between the Gaza Strip and Israel.

No Israelis have been killed during the protests.

Last week, the UN Human Rights Council voted to send a team of international war crimes investigators to probe the deadly shootings.
