Israeli tank shells Hamas post in Gaza

An Israeli tank fired at a Hamas position on Tuesday after a military post was burned down on the Gaza border overnight, the army said.

"A number of terrorists infiltrated into Israel and set a military post on fire. In response, an (Israeli) tank targeted an observation post belonging to the Hamas terror organisation in the southern Gaza Strip," the army said in a statement, using the term "terrorist" for the militants.

Suspected Palestinian militants crossed the border and set fire to an Israeli position - which was unmanned at the time - before returning back to Gaza the army said.

It did not confirm reports that it was a sniper tent.

A drone from northern Gaza also landed in Israel overnight and was being "examined" by the military. 

On 30 March, Palestinians began protests on the Gaza border for the right to return to the homes their families fled or were expelled from in 1948, during the war surrounding the creation of Israel.

At least 118 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since then, according to authorities in Gaza. No Israelis have been killed in that timeframe and only one injured.

On 14 May, 62 Palestinians were massacred when Israeli snipers opened fire on protesters in Gaza.
