Qatar says hasn't received official invite to GCC summit in Riyadh

Qatar has yet to receive an official invitation an upcoming Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) summit in the Saudi capital, a Qatari official has said.

Media Bureau spokesman Al-Sayed Hassan made the comments to Russia's state-run Sputnik news agency on Tuesday.

"We are working closely with relevant authorities to obtain a confirmation of participation in the summit of GCC leaders," Hassan was quoted as saying.

"Qatar continues to call for peaceful, open dialogue to try to resolve this conflict," he said, referring to a Saudi-led blockade on Doha.

Earlier this month, a Kuwaiti official said Qatar was expected to attend the summit next month, which comes a year-and-a-half after a Saudi-led quartet severed diplomatic and trade relations with Qatar, closing land, air and sea links.

Hassan also hailed Kuwaiti efforts to mediate the worst crisis to hit the Gulf in decades.

The Saudi-led bloc has accused Doha of supporting terrorism and their foe Iran, which Doha strongly denies saying the boycott aims to impinge on its sovereignty.

Shortly after breaking ties with Doha, the bloc, which includes the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt, issued a list of demands for Qatar that included calling for shuttering Al Jazeera and The New Arab, saying it had to comply in order to normalise ties.

On Tuesday, Riyadh and Cairo reiterated their refusal to "make any concessions" towards Doha and said that the blockade would remain in effect until further notice.

The announcement was made following a meeting in Cairo between Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
