A general strike affecting shops and markets has started in the northern Syrian city of Manbij, in response to alleged ongoing violations committed by the YPG - Kurdish People's Protection Units.

Images of the city's empty markets and streets were shared on social media, with all shops closed, and many of the city's residents remaining in their homes.

The strike comes in response to Syrian tribes in the area, and has been named the "dignity strike".

It follows the death of two young men from the city, allegedly under torture while in custody of YPG forces.

The Kurdish administration in the city, however, announced on Facebook that the demonstrations were against the Syrian and Turkish regimes who "aim to create strife and disturb security".

The strike comes after large demonstrations were carried out on Friday, ending in clashes between protesters and Kurdish forces.

Manbij, a traditionally ethically diverse city, was captured by Kurdish-led forces in 2016 after fierce battles with the Islamic State group.
