Israeli troops shoot dead Palestinian teenager in West Bank

An Israeli army spokesperson claimed that the incident came after "firebombs were hurled at passing vehicles" on a road near the Arroub refugee camp.

She confirmed one of the alleged assailants was hit, but did not confirm he had died.

"In response to that immediate threat forces fired toward the suspects and a hit has been identified," she told AFP.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health identified the victim as 16-year-old Murad Yussef Abu Ghazi, and said he was shot in the chest.

Palestinian security officials said Abu Ghazi was shot dead during clashes with soldiers in which another youth was seriously wounded by army fire. 

His death was not the first time this year that Israeli forces fatally shot a Palestinian teenager.

In January, Israeli soldiers shot dead 19-year-old Mohammed Abu Khalifa after an incursion into the Jenin camp in the occupied West Bank.

An Israeli army spokesperson alleged at the time that the soldiers had opened fire after entering the camp and being attacked with explosive devices.

A popular Palestinian uprising that erupted in October 2015 has resulted in the deaths of more than 250 Palestinians, 40 Israelis, two Americans, a Jordanian, an Eritrean and a Sudanese.

Israel says the violence is fuelled by a Palestinian campaign of incitement, while the Palestinians say it stems from anger over decades of Israeli rule.
