A Palestinian man was wounded after Israeli army tanks fired shells into Gaza on Monday morning.

A tank fired into the northern area of the besieged strip, with the Israeli army claiming it was targeting a Hamas post and that the artillery fire came in response to a rocket fired from the territory about an hour earlier which landed in southern Israel, the Israeli military said.

The Israeli army said the rocket landed in an open area in Ashkelon, reporting no injuries or damages.

The slightly wounded 70-year-old Palestinian man was identifed as a passerby, health workers said.

The last rocket fired at Israel from Gaza was in mid-January when an Israeli tank fired back. There were no reported casualties in these incidents.

Monday's cross-border exchange came after locals in Gaza reported two separate incidents of Israeli forces opening fire at them, Bethlehem-based Ma'an news agency reported.

Israeli forces stationed at watchtowers reportedly opened fire at the southern towns of al-Qarara and Khuzaa, east of Khan Yunis.

Fishermen off the coast of the enclave were also shot at in a separate incident, while Israeli bulldozers also made an incursion into central Gaza to level lands.

The Israeli incursions come a day after a Hamas fighter succumbed to wounds he sustained in an "accidental explosion" in the northern Gaza Strip, according to Gaza's Health Ministry.

The Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, said in a statement that 37-year-old Muhammad Walidal-Quqa had been involved in "jihadist activities, including manufacturing and assembling explosives".

Israeli officials have accused Hamas of "preparing" for another war with Israel and have threatened retaliatory measures against the Gaza Strip as a whole.

However the movement has not officially claimed responsibility for any military action from Gaza against Israel since the 2014 war.
