A tank fired into the northern area of the besieged strip, with the Israeli army claiming it was targeting a Hamas post and that the artillery fire came in response to a projectile that was fired from the territory about an hour earlier.

The last rocket fired at Israel from Gaza was in mid-January when an Israeli tank fired back. There were no reported casualties in these incidents.
Monday's cross-border exchange came after locals in Gaza reported two separate incidents of Israeli forces opening fire at them, Bethlehem-based Ma'an news agency reported.Israeli forces stationed at watchtowers reportedly opened fire at the southern towns of al-Qarara and Khuzaa, east of Khan Yunis.

The Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, said in a statement that 37-year-old Muhammad Walidal-Quqa had been involved in "jihadist activities, including manufacturing and assembling explosives".
