Israeli forces 'injure over 50 Palestinians' protesting Jerusalem decision

Local Palestinian health authorities said more than 50 Palestinians were injured in the protests and 16 were hospitalised on Friday while taking part in a "Day of Rage" rally.

Trump caused outrage and concern after dismissing warnings from Arab leaders, European allies and even the Pope by announcing the US' recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel on Wednesday. 

The move ends seven decades of US ambiguity on the status of the Holy City, which is vociferously claimed by both Israelis and Palestinians, and his decision immediately caused a stir with US allies who condemned the move.

Leader of Palestinian Hamas group Ismail Haniya called for a new Palestinian uprising in retaliation to Trump's move.

In a speech on Thursday, Haniya's address to "the Palestinian people, the Palestinian Authority and the rest of the Arab World" announced the start of a new intifada, due to begin on Friday.

The leader of the Palestinian movement urged that the new Intifada begins on Friday, a holy day for Muslims and to coincide with the day of rage.

He described Trump's decision as an "aggression on our people and a war on our safety."

Friday's "Day of Rage" marks the second day of protests. Rallies also took place on Thursday in the West Bank cities of Hebron, Ramallah, Nablus, Jenin and Bethlehem. Hundreds of Palestinians were again attacked by Israeli forces during these protests. 

Trump's move has been condemned worldwide and protests have also been taking place globally on Friday in Turkey, Egypt, Pakistan, Indonesia, Malaysia and Jordan.
