German police killed a man Monday night after he attacked passengers on a train with an axe and a knife, seriously wounding three people, news agency DPA reported.

A fourth person was lightly injured in the attack on a regional train near the southern city of Wuerzburg, police told DPA, adding that the man was killed as he tried to flee.

A man had attacked passengers with an axe on a train in the German state of Bavaria on Monday evening, wounding a dozen people, several of them critically, a police spokesman said.

It was not immediately clear whether the attack is linked to international terrorism.

Authorities in several countries have been on high alert following an attack in southern France that killed 84 people.

That attack, perpetrated by a so-called lone wolf, has since been claimed by Islamic State group.
