Multiple bombings rock Lebanese border village

At least five people were killed when a string of suicide bombings rocked a Lebanese village near the Syrian border on Monday.

Multiple attacks hit the Christian-dominated al-Qaa village, with sources suggesting at least four suicide bombers striking before dawn.

"The first attacker knocked on one of the homes in the village, but after the resident became suspicious, he blew himself up," the source said.

Three other suicide attackers detonated their explosives as people began gathering to treat those wounded by the initial blast.

"We chased the fourth attacker and shot at him, and he blew himself up," Matar said, adding that five villagers had been killed in the attack.

Security forces cordoned off the sites of the blasts less than 100 meters on the main road linking the Syrian al-Qusayr town to Lebanon’s eastern Bekaa valley.

"Al-Qaa is the gateway to the rest of Lebanon, and here we stopped a plan for a much bigger explosion," said al-Qaa mayor Bashir Matar.

At least four soldiers were wounded in the blast, a statement from Lebanon's army said.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
