More blasts hit Baghdad after a weekend of bombings

At least 14 people were killed and 41 others injured when the bomb exploded in Saidiya district southern Baghdad, an interior ministry source told The New Arab. 

Women and children were reported to be among the causalities.

Almost at the same time anotehr bomb exploded in the town of Tarmiyah, northern Baghdad, killing two people and injuring nine more. 

No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks, but Islamic State group perpetrated similar attacks in southern Iraq on Sunday, killing at least 33 people.

On Saturday, another car bomb explosion on the outskirts of the Iraqi capital by the ultra-radical militant group killing 23 Shia pilgrims.

IS overran large areas north and west of Baghdad in 2014, but Iraqi forces and Kurdish militias - backed by US-led airstrikes - have since regained significant ground.

The extremists still control large parts of northern and western Iraq, and are able to carry out frequent bombings in government-held areas.
