Tunisia closes border with Libya after attack

Tunisia has announced a temporary closure of its border with Libya on Wednesday as part of beefed up security measures after the deadly bus bombing in the capital.

Tunisia has announced a temporary closure of its border with Libya on Wednesday as part of beefed up security measures in the wake of the deadly bus bombing in the capital on Tuesday evening.

The country's National Security Council announced a 15-day closure of the Tunisian border with Libya starting at midnight on Wednesday, after it held a meeting with top government officials including President Beji Caid Essebsi.

The council also decided to place "terror suspects" under "administrative surveillance", whereby suspects will be required to report to authorities on a regular basis or be subject to house arrest.

Websites and social media accounts related to terrorism will also be blocked as part of the state of emergency declared by President Beji Caid Essebsi late on Tuesday.

A suicide bomber targeted a bus carrying Tunisian presidential guard members as it travelled through a central street in Tunis on Tuesday evening, killing 13 people including himself.

The ministry of interior announced on Wednesday that 12 victims were identified, while the 13th was suspected to be the attacker who used a suicide belt containing 10 kilograms of explosives to carry out the attack.

The Islamic State group on Wednesday released an online statement claiming responsibility for the deadly attack.
