Palestinian teenager killed by Israeli army in West Bank

A Palestinian teenager has been shot dead by the Israeli army at a border crossing in the northern West Bank on Monday.

The Palestinian health ministry identified him as 16-year-old Ahmed Abu El Rob.

Israel claim the teenager attempted to stab an Israeli soldier on the Palestinian side of a crossing between Israel and the occupied West Bank, Israel's defence ministry said.

A second Palestinian, allegedly an accomplice, was arrested, according to police.

The latest shooting brings the number of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces to 69. Many others have also been wounded.

The killing of Ahmed Abu El Rob comes days after the death of a Palestinian baby, exposed to tear gas fired by the Israeli army near his West Bank home on Friday.

Eight-month-old, Ramadan Thawabteh, died after the gas seeped into his house in Bethlehem not far from where clashes broke out between stone-throwing youths and Israeli soldiers.

Violence also broke out over the weekend in the flashpoint West Bank city of Hebron as Palestinians buried five teenagers killed by Israeli forces in a wave of attacks and clashes.

The surge of unrest since early October has triggered fears of a third Palestinian uprising by a generation gripped by despair and anger over stalled peace efforts.
