Families in bombed and besieged Eastern Ghouta have been suffocated in their homes in the latest suspected regime massacre of Syrians in the Damascus suburb.
The latest atrocity has killed up to a hundred people and left more than 1,000 injured, according to activists and the White Helmets rescue group.
The US said Assad regime-backers Russia bear responsibility, though Moscow denies the accusation.
The attack comes days after the first anniversary of the devastating sarin chemical attack on Khan Sheikhoun which killed up to 100 civilians.
That massacre led the US to launch cruise missile strikes on a regime air base.
The US has hinted at a severe response again, and the UK foreign office has called for an investigation.
Graphic images and videos showed semi-lifeless children struggling to breathe. Entire families succumbed to the attack on the floors of underground shelters and survivors screamed in agony.
Images of dead parents clutching their children in their final moments have been shared on social media as users urge the world not to stand by.
