Abdullahi Halakhe is a senior advocate for east and southern Africa at Refugees International.

Jehanne Henry is a former director at Human Rights Watch’s Africa division and follows Sudan and South Sudan closely. They traveled to the Egypt-Sudan border in May to examine the humanitarian situation. 

A more humane approach is needed at the Egypt-Sudan border

Egypt has responded to Sudanese seeking refuge with hostility, closing its borders and imposing visa restrictions. Only a more compassionate response can prevent a humanitarian crisis, write Abdullahi Halakhe and Jehanne Henry.
