Syria remained one of the deadliest places in the world to be a journalist in 2016 after 19 of the 57 journalists killed around the world died covering its civil war.

Seemingly every armed faction in the conflict wants to kill or at least detain journalists that don't spin out their version of propaganda.

This has made the war even harder for the outside world to follow, as truth blends with fiction and the war criminals are allowed to continue evading justice.

This year Syria ranked 177 out of 180 in the world rankings, highlighting the horrendous environment journalists and media workers face.

Professional journalists and citizen-journalists alike are victims of violence by all parties, the Syrian military and its allies, the various armed opposition groups including the Islamic State group and Hayat Tahrir al Sham, the Kurdish forces and more recently the Turkish incursion into Afrin in early 2018, said Reporters Without Borders.
