US President Donald Trump 'may visit Turkey': reports

The Turkish newspaper Hurriyet reported that the time of the visit was agreed in a phone call between US National Security Advisor John Bolton and Ibrahim Kalin, the spokesman for Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

There are several areas of dispute between the two nations, which are both members of NATO.

Turkey's decision to purchase the S-400 missile system from Russia has aroused the ire of US officials. The US has threatened to end Turkish participation in the F-35 fighter jet program, saying that the fighter jets are "too sensitive" to operate in tandem with the Russian missile system.

US Vice President Mike Pence said that Turkey was risking its membership of NATO by planning to purchase the system.

Turkey, however, has refused to back down from the purchase. Erdogan has proposed the creation of a joint working group on the S-400 missiles to Trump but the US president has not agreed to this so far.

Despite the dispute, Turkish pilots are still being trained on the F-35 fighter aircraft and the US is planning to supply four of the planes to Turkey in October.

Trump and Erdogan are also expected to discuss trade relations. The Turkish presidency said that the two countries both hope to increase the value of their mutual trade to 75 billion US dollars per annum.
