Sudanese protesters have rallied outside the Egyptian embassy in Khartoum to demand the neighbouring country's military leader stops interfering in a transition to civilian rule.

The New Arab's Arabic-language service reported on Thursday that hundreds protested at the mission after Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi urged that Sudan's new military rulers "needed more time" for the transition.

"Sisi you coward… your limit is Aswan," protesters chanted, in reference to Egypt's southernmost city.

Egypt hosted African leaders for emergency talks on Tuesday to discuss the upheavals in Sudan and Libya.

Sisi urged for Sudan's ruling military council to implement "peaceful, organised and democratic transition measures" within three months.

He also stressed the "the need for more time" for a transition, urging the African Union to extend its end of April deadline for the military council to hand power to civilians or face suspension from the bloc.

The protest comes days after protesters similarly called on oil-rich Gulf states Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to stop attempting to meddle in the country.

On Sunday, they offered $3 billion in financial aid to cash-starved Sudan.

Egypt and the Gulf states have pledged to support Sudan's transitional military council, which has taken control of the country after long-time dictator Omar al-Bashir was overthrown.

Protesters have expressed fears the council could "steal the revolution" from the people in a manner similar to the outcome of the Egyptian uprising.
