Morocco's king has sent a medical team to the besieged Gaza Strip to set up a field hospital amid a bloody crackdown on Palestinian protesters by Israeli troops.

Mohammed VI gave the orders on Sunday, Moroccan news website Hibapress reported, citing a Foreign Ministry statement.

"The gesture from his highness aims to provide urgent treatment for wounded civilians in recent events in Gaza," the statement said.

It added that the setting up of the hospital was "in line with the king's historic commitment to the Palestinian cause".

Hamas, the Islamic movement that runs Gaza, said on Monday that Rabat had made the move after the group's leader pleaded with Moroccan authorities for medical aid for wounded protesters.

At least 116 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire and more than 10,000 have been injured since mass demonstrations began on March 30.

Morocco's foreign minister has strongly condemned "the excessive use of force against unarmed Palestinian civilians".

They bloodshed peaked on May 14, when at least 61 Palestinians were killed as tens of thousands of Gazans protested on the same day of the US transfer of its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

No Israelis have been killed and only a few soldiers have suffered minor injuries.

Israel has been condemned globally for its use of deadly force against the protesters.

The UN Human Rights Council has voted to send a team of international war crimes investigators to probe the deadly shootings.
