US local authorities vote on renaming Saudi embassy street after Khashoggi
A neighbourhood advisory panel in the US capital Washington DC is set to vote on renaming the street outside the Saudi embassy in the city after murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
Advisory Neighborhood Commission 2A board members will convene on Wednesday evening to vote on the proposal, The Washington Post reported.
According to US media reports, the resolution is expected to pass.
After that it would have to be approved by the DC Council and then would be subject to congressional review.
The idea to commemorate Khashoggi’s death in Washington was first proposed last month in an online petition that has received more than 7,500 signatures.
Khashoggi was brutally killed at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2.
The journalist was strangled and then dismembered in what Saudi Arabia said was a "rogue" operation - though CIA analysis leaked to the US media appeared to implicate Saudi Crown Prince Prince Mohammed.
Earlier this month, Amnesty International campaigners on Friday renamed the road outside the Saudi embassy in London as "Khashoggi Street" to mark the one-month anniversary of the journalist's murder.
