Members of rival Palestinian factions Fatah and Hamas held an emergency assembly on Tuesday evening at the Palestinian embassy in Lebanon to discuss the deteriorating security situation in the Palestinian refugee camp of Ain al-Hilweh.

Both Fatah and Hamas have agreed to jointly tackle extremism in the refugee camp and deal with those who “disrupt order”, according to Palestine based Ma’an News Agency.

They plan on working together to establish a united national front and organising joint efforts to reinstate security and stability in Ain al-Hilweh.

The movement also agreed on continuing bilateral meetings and sessions with Islamic and national Palestinian factions to guarantee security in the refugee camp, along with integrating both Islamic and nationalist Palestinian factions in their operations.

This comes after clashes between Palestinian security forces and Sunni Islamists in Ain al-Hilweh left people dead last week.

The fighting began last Thursday after a leader of an armed faction sympathetic to the Islamist Badr group fired at the headquarters of a joint security force comprising the main Palestinian factions.
