A young Palestinian man was shot dead by an Israeli soldier in the occupied West Bank after an alleged stabbing attack, the Israeli army said.

An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma'an News that an "attacker armed with a knife entered a house" in the illegal settlement outpost of Havat More in the Masafer Yatta area and stabbed a settler, injuring him lightly.

The Palestinian health ministry named the dead man as 24-year-old Saad Qaysih from the Dhahiriya district south of Hebron.

Since a wave of violence broke out in October 2015, 252 Palestinians, 41 Israelis, two Americans, a Jordanian, an Eritrean and a Sudanese have died.

An Israeli military court recently sentenced a soldier to 18 months in prison for shooting dead an injured Palestinian man.

Elor Azaria, 21, was found guilty of manslaughter for killing Abdul Fatah al-Sharif as he lay on the ground in the southern occupied West Bank in March last year.

The occupied West Bank and Israel has seen a number of knife, gun or car-ramming attacks, according to Israeli authorities.

Other Palestinians have been killed during protests, in clashes or Israeli air raids on Gaza.

Israeli troops are accused of leaving injured Palestinians shot by security forces to bleed to death or being subject to summary executions.

The rate of attacks has declined sharply in recent months.
