Relations between the US and Iran have deteriorated sharply since Donald Trump took office last month and introduced a travel ban from seven Muslim-majority countries, including Iran.

While tension brews between both states, some Iranians have taken to social media counter the hateful rhetoric and spread some love.

A social media campaign initiated on Wednesday to thank Americans who stood up against Trump's now-halted ban has taken Twitter by storm.

The hashtag #LoveBeyondFlags initiated by the campaign has since been used in over 32,000 tweets, mostly coming from inside the Islamic Republic, where social media sites are blocked by Iranian authorities.

Social media users bypassed the block using special software to share messages of solidarity and gratitude with the Americans.

"We thank Americans who stood up for the seven countries blocked from entering the US by the new travel ban," an Iranian tweeter said.

"Let Trump and Mullahs right in the ring if they wish. But we are the PEOPLE. Let us make peace, #LoveBeyondFlags,” another user said.

Many shared pictures with both the American and Iranian flags, along with messages against the burning of flags.

Other users shared pictures from Friday's rally marking the anniversary of the 1979 revolution, showing demonstrators carrying signs in support of Americans.

Hardliners in Iran have upheld a long-time tradition of burning the American flag and chanting 'Death to America' as a symbol of resistance to American imperialism.
