Google, the world's go-to search engine, has revealed the most popular search terms from  the Arab world over the past year with pop culture and celebrity deaths surprisingly coming out on top.

1. Prince Saud al-Faisal: was the world's longest serving foreign minister, spending four decades in the job before retiring in April for "health reasons". He passed away on 9 July at the age of 75.

2. Saud al-Dosari: was a popular Saudi talk show host who passed away suddenly on August 7 from a sudden heart attack at the age of 46. Dosari won several awards throughout his life, including Best Arab TV Presenter in 1995.

3. Banat al-Shams (Daughters of the Sun): is the latest in a wave of Turkish soap operas to gain popularity across the Middle East. The show follows the life of a divorcee who falls in love with a successful businessman and her three daughters' mixed reactions to their marriage.

4. King Abdullah: was Saudi Arabia's sixth king who held power through a period of regional instability, the Arab Spring uprisings and the rise of extremism. He passed away on January 23 at the age of 90 and was replaced by his half-brother King Salman.

5. Al-Ishq al-Mashbouh (Black Money Love): is another popular Turkish television series. The show's plot revolves around a police officer who marries the girl of his dreams, however he soon finds out that love is not all it is cracked up to be.

6. LM3ALLEM (The Boss): was without a doubt this summer's biggest Arabic hit song, performed by Moroccan singer Saad Lamjarred. The song was the first Arabic-language music video to have been viewed more than 100 million times on YouTube.

7. Agario: is a multiplayer video game. Players control a cell in a map representing a petri dish; the goal is to gain as much mass as possible by swallowing smaller cells without being swallowed by bigger ones.

8. Mirna al-Muhandis: was an Egyptian actress who passed away on August 5 after a long struggle with leukaemia at the age of 37. Muhandis starred in more than 60 productions over her successful career, which began when she was just nine-years-old.

9. Operation Decisive Storm: is the ongoing military intervention in Yemen. In March, Saudi-led coalition began carrying out air raids on Houthi rebels who took over Yemen's capital. More than 5,800 people have been killed in Yemen - about half of them civilians - and more than 27,000 wounded since March.

10. Nour al-Sherif: was a prolific Egyptian actor who died on August 11. Sherif's big break was in the late 1960s when he played a supporting role in the screen adaptation of a famous novel by Egyptian Nobel Prize laureate Naguib Mahfouz.

1. Mafesh Saheb Yetsaheb (There're no more real friends): this catchy electro-shaabi song by Alexandrian band Shobek Lobek took Egypt by storm this year racking up over 32 million views on YouTube.

2. Ramez Wakel al-Gaw (Ramez in Control): this hidden camera prank TV show has become a staple programme during Ramadan. This year the show had celebrities, including Paris Hilton, boarding a plane for an aerial tour of Dubai, only for the situation quickly descend into terror.

4. School final exams: this year's secondary school exams in Egypt were plagued by rampant cheating and exam questions leaking online. One top-performing school girl received zero marks across the board on her exams and unwittingly became an anti-corruption icon.

5. Mirna al-Muhandis: See above.

6. Min al-Nadhra al-Thanya (What can I call this love?): is a popular Indian soap opera. The series revolves around a couple whose hate for each other paves the way for love to blossom.

7. Seeb Eedi (Let go of my hand): this low budget racy music video famous for its excessive jiggling landed a female singer and two men in prison for a year on charges of "inciting debauchery".

8. Captain Masr (Captain Egypt): is a hit football comedy, the film tells the story of promising footballer who is imprisoned for running over a traffic warden. In jail he puts together a prisoners' football team with hilarious results.

9. Suez Canal snake: blatantly photoshopped images of a massive snake allegedly uncovered by the army while digging the expansion to the Suez Canal circulated online earlier this year. This is definitely the most bizarre search topic to make it onto the 2015 list.
